I've been asked to join Spoke Art's Wes Anderson tribute show taking place later this year in Portland, Oregon. Not only is Wes Anderson one of my favourite directors, but The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my favourite films of all time so it wasn't a tough choice to go through his filmography and select what I'd be illustrating. "Go, Mordecai!"
I wanted the colour palette to be realistic but stylised, I was able to pull lots of red, blue and beige straight out of the film. After going through a few colour studies involving different seasons, I decided that the final palette would take the best elements of the three shown above. I wanted the feeling of a subtle golden hour sunset hitting the building. Adobe Photoshop was used for the entire drawing process.
The Royal Tenenbaums is a very character heavy film, but I feel as if the Tenenbaum house itself is as big of a character as the rest of the family. Because of this, a lot of work went into bringing the iconic New York family style home to life. Every detail had to be considered to create the final light snowy-spring atmosphere.
